Merkati su male životinje koje žive u Bocvani, u pustinji Kalahari. Visoki su samo 30 centimetara, a mladunci tek nekih šest centimetara. Žive u jazbinama koje izgledaju kao lavirint, jer merkati sebi kopaju mnogo prolaza unutar zemlje. Mesojedi su i veoma su društvene životinje.
Ove čeprkave životinjice žive u grupama od oko dvadeset članova. Svaka grupa ima svog čuvara koji pazi, pre svega, na grabljivice – kako one u vazduhu, tako i one na zemlji.
